Shaggy Hair Do Care

So, I’m trying to grow my hair out.

Don’t panic, I’ll still have short hair! I’ll still be confused with P!nk and Megan Rapinoe and the other two blondes in the world (evidently we all look alike.) I’m not going back to the Rapunzel look. At least not yet.

I’m just trying to grow it out past the “must be trimmed with clippers and snipped with snippers at least every four-to-six weeks” length.

No, I’m not complaining about the trials of having short hair. Having short hair is delightful. “Hair wash day,” as other women (and some men) call it, takes me approximately 60 seconds, and happens…well…every day. I spend about another 60 seconds “doing” my hair. Honestly, there are days I forget that I have hair.

Short hair truly don’t care.

However, there are drawbacks, including the limited “looks” I can achieve when my hair is shorter than my father’s.

So, I’m growing it out a bit.

But golly gee willikers is it annoying to be shaggy.

In fact, I recently realized that I go slower in workouts at the gym when my hair is shaggy. Yes, I am serious. See, I was doing box jumps, and my shaggy hair kept falling in my eyes, and I was annoyed. Then I remembered that I had a hair tie on my wrist, I pulled my shaggy hair up into what I like to call my “Samurai ponytail,” and VOILA! It was like someone cranked my speed up to 10!

It gets even worse than that. Sometimes I come home at the end of the day and I find myself feeling incredibly cranky. And then I realize it’s because my hair has been on my face all day. Truly. I get it out of my face and I’m a new woman.

These side effects of the shag are why I don’t grow my hair out. I always give up a few months in.

But one of these days, I feel like I’m going to make it. I’m going to decide that the grumpiness and the slowness and the annoyance are truly worth having more hairstyle options, and I’m going to soldier through the shagginess with all the power and poise of a real Samurai.

I just don’t know if it’s going to be this time around. But even if it isn’t, this whole situation has got me wondering: Are there things in your life that annoy you but you put up with them anyway to get somewhere you want to go or have something you want to have?

Pets, for instance, seem like they could fit in this category. Pets are wildly inconvenient. But if you want one badly enough, you put up with the annoyance and the hair and the smells and the zooming around at 2am when you’re trying to sleep.

So what about you? What do you put up with so you can have what you want?
