Well, it’s been a busy week and I’ll be sitting through a three-day training this weekend, so I’ve had very little time for creativity. However, even on busy weeks, my brain likes to chugga chugga choo choo through problems, whether I have time to solve them or not. And so, I’m going to take advantage of you, my captive audience, and crowdsource an answer.
You should know upfront that you are my second choice for an answer to this issue. It’s not personal, I promise. The first person I brought this to was my therapist. We talked about it for approximately 36 minutes, and although she had some good ideas, I am still puzzling out my thoughts on the subject.
No more suspense, here’s the subject:
Meal preparation.

There are several factors in this current season of my life that make meal prep a necessity.
- I’m on a very tight budget these days, so eating out is not viable.
- I’m trying to get more fit and grow muscle mass, so I need to eat a large amount of food.
- My blood sugar will not allow me to skip meals without either napping 7-8 times a day or ripping innocent bystanders to shreds.
- I’m partially working from home right now, but also have to pack all of my meals 2-3 times a week.
And so, I try to prepare my meals.
But I hate it and I’m inconsistent.
After my therapy session yesterday, I believe I hate it for two reasons:
- There are way too many steps (shop, put food away, decide on meals, cook meals, put meals away, wash dishes) and I really like efficiency and simplicity
- Cooking has no obvious, meaningful result because I can cook today and cook tomorrow, and then the next day I have nothing to show for it

Basically, even when I think about meal prepping, it brings the napping and innocent bystander shredding I mentioned, and that’s not ideal for my quality of life.
And what I’m not sure of is, is this an attitude problem or a practical problem? Do I need to change my perspective on tasks like these? Or do I need to find a better way to do them that doesn’t make me so crazy?
Or, I suppose, is it just always going to be rough if/until I have enough money to pay someone else to do my meal preparation?

Here’s where you come in. How do you deal with life tasks like this – cleaning, laundry, cooking, etc. – that just have to be done over and over again with nothing to show for it?
Advise me.
