Just Do the Thing

My friends and I have been talking about going to a trivia night for at least four years. I love trivia and I really love hanging out with my friends, so I’ve always thought it was a great idea. But for a thousand little reasons over the years, we haven’t made it happen. Too busy, too sick, too broke, conflicting schedules, trivia was canceled that week, snow storms, you name it, we’ve let it derail our plans. But this week, for no particular reason that I’m aware of, we finally decided to just do the thing.

And it was so great! We ate, drank, guessed, laughed, discussed Jimmy Carter and baseball statistics and South Korean television, and sang along to a great early 2000s playlist. We even did pretty well, tying for first in the first half, and tying for second before the final question! (We finished 6th because we went all in on the final question, but we all agreed to just go big and then go home.)

I haven’t had time to write lately (I had Covid again, which was…fine, I guess?) so I told myself I could keep this short, but I had to write something. And in keeping with that thought, my question for today is this: why is it so hard to just do the thing? Why is it such a struggle to write the blog post, book the trip, sign up for the race, or go to trivia? Trivia is fun, for goodness’ sake! I learned that the six deepest mines in the world are all in South Africa, and that’s just a darn cool fact! It did not need to take more than four years for trivia night to happen.

I really want to know – why is it so hard?

And also, what’s the thing on your list? Maybe this is the week that you just do the thing, too.
